Thanks to the booming cruise industry and growing passenger numbers, cruise ships are now highly significant for the economies of both ports and cities. Taking the example of the four largest German ports (Kiel, Warnemünde, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven), the authors identify the criteria and factors that are particularly important to cruise lines in choosing ports for embarkation and disembarkation as well as ports of call.
